TikTok LIVE Requirements Explained: Age, Access & RTMP

TikTok LIVE Requirements Explained: Age, Access & RTMP

Short answer: To stream to TikTok LIVE through Castream you need four things: be 18 or older, have LIVE access on your account, have separate RTMP/stream-key access (not every LIVE account gets this), and keep your account in good standing. If any one of these is missing, the stream won't connect — and each one has a different fix.

Most "why won't my TikTok stream work" problems aren't technical at all. They're eligibility problems — the account simply doesn't have the permission yet. Here's exactly what TikTok requires, why each requirement exists, and what to do when you don't meet one.

1. You must be 18 or older

TikTok restricts LIVE broadcasting to adults. This isn't a Castream rule — it's TikTok's, and there's no workaround: if the account holder is under 18, the LIVE option won't appear at all.

What to do: Make sure the birthdate on the TikTok account is correct and the account is registered to someone 18+. TikTok verifies this at the account level, so a wrong birthdate entered years ago can silently block LIVE access today.

2. Your account needs LIVE access

LIVE access is the basic permission to broadcast from the TikTok mobile app. Most active adult accounts get it automatically, but newer or inactive accounts sometimes don't have it yet.

Signs you have it: you can open TikTok, tap the create (+) button, and see a LIVE option. Signs you don't: the LIVE option simply isn't there.

What to do if it's missing: Use the account normally for a while — post videos, engage, complete your profile. TikTok rolls LIVE access out to accounts with genuine activity. There's no application form and no published follower threshold; consistent, real usage is the fastest path.

3. Your account needs RTMP access (this is the one people miss)

Here's the critical distinction: LIVE access and RTMP access are two separate permissions. Plenty of accounts can go live from the TikTok mobile app but have no stream key option — and without a stream key, Castream (or OBS, or any external tool) can't send video to TikTok.

How to check: open TikTok's LIVE setup area and look for options like Stream key, Go LIVE from desktop, Cast to PC/Mac, or Streaming software. If you see a Server URL and Stream Key, you have RTMP access. If those options don't exist anywhere in your LIVE setup, your account has LIVE access but not RTMP access.

What to do if it's missing: This is the frustrating one, because TikTok doesn't publish the criteria. What creators report helps: going live from the mobile app regularly (TikTok seems to grant RTMP to accounts that already use LIVE), keeping the account in good standing, and patience — the option often appears quietly after weeks of regular live activity. There is no toggle to request it and no support ticket that grants it. Keep streaming from mobile in the meantime; every session seems to help.

4. Your account must be in good standing

TikTok can restrict or revoke LIVE access for community-guideline violations — and it can do so without much warning. A restriction can look like: LIVE option disappears, streams get cut mid-broadcast, or RTMP credentials stop working.

What to do: Check TikTok's account status/notifications for any warnings or strikes. If you've been restricted, the only fix is waiting out the penalty and keeping future content within the guidelines. And while you're setting up: never share your stream key publicly, since a leaked key being abused by someone else can get your account flagged.

Putting it together: the eligibility checklist

Before you connect TikTok to Castream, confirm all four:

  • Account holder is 18+
  • LIVE option appears in the TikTok app
  • Server URL + Stream Key visible in the LIVE setup area (RTMP access)
  • No active warnings, strikes, or restrictions on the account

If all four check out, you're ready — the connection walkthrough is How to Stream to TikTok LIVE Using RTMP. If your keys ever stop working down the line, start here: TikTok Stream Key Not Working? How to Fix It.

Quick answers to common questions

"I can go live in the app — why can't I find a stream key?" Because those are two different permissions (requirement 2 vs requirement 3 above). The app LIVE button needs basic LIVE access; the stream key needs RTMP access on top of it. This is the single most misunderstood part of TikTok streaming.

"How many followers do I need?" TikTok doesn't publish a follower requirement for LIVE or RTMP access, and anyone quoting you a number is guessing. What matters is account age, genuine activity, and standing — not a magic follower count.

"Can I use someone else's account that has RTMP access?" Technically the stream key would work, but the broadcast goes to their account and audience, not yours — and sharing stream keys violates the "keep it private" rule for good reason. Build access on your own account instead.

"My stream key worked yesterday and doesn't today — did I lose access?" Probably not. TikTok stream keys expire and rotate regularly. Generate a fresh Server URL + Stream Key from TikTok's LIVE setup and update your Castream destination. If fresh keys also fail, then check your account standing.

"Does Castream need any special permission from TikTok?" No. Castream just sends video to the RTMP credentials you paste in — the same way OBS does. All the eligibility lives on TikTok's side.

What to stream while you wait for access

Don't let missing RTMP access stall you. Connect your other destinations — YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Pages — and start building the habit and the audience now. Save TikTok as a destination the moment RTMP appears, and from then on it's just another toggle. The creators who grow fastest on TikTok LIVE are usually the ones who were already streaming everywhere else first.
