How to Stream to X (Twitter) Live with Castream

How to Stream to X (Twitter) Live with Castream

Picture this: you're a podcaster and a story breaks in your niche. Your audience is already arguing about it on X. You could type a thread — or you could go live in five minutes and own the conversation while it's hot.

X (formerly Twitter) supports live video through its Media Studio, and it hands you RTMP credentials for exactly this purpose. That means Castream can send your stream to X just like it does to TikTok or Instagram: paste in a server URL and a stream key, and you're broadcasting to your followers' timelines.

How X live streaming works with Castream

X doesn't offer a one-click integration in most third-party apps. Instead, you create a broadcast in X Media Studio, which generates an RTMP URL and a stream key. Any streaming tool that accepts custom RTMP — Castream included — can push video to those credentials. Once configured, X behaves like any other destination in your Castream list: toggle it on, go live, done.

What you'll need

  • An X account with access to Media Studio (studio.x.com)
  • The Castream app installed — see how to create an account if you're new
  • About five minutes

Get your RTMP credentials from X Media Studio

  1. Open X Media Studio on desktop and sign in
  2. Go to the Producer section (this is X's live broadcast tool)
  3. Create a new broadcast — give it a title and any details X asks for
  4. X will generate your ingest credentials:
    • RTMP URL (the server address)
    • Stream key
  5. Copy both values and keep the Media Studio tab open

A note on keys: X stream keys are sensitive. Don't post screenshots that include them, and if one ever gets exposed, create a fresh broadcast to get a new key.

Add X as a custom RTMP destination in Castream

  1. Open the Castream app
  2. Head to Settings → Destinations
  3. Tap Add destination, then pick Custom RTMP
  4. Name it something obvious — X Live works
  5. Paste the RTMP URL from Media Studio
  6. Paste the stream key
  7. Save

X is now saved permanently. You won't have to enter these again unless X issues you a new key.

Go live

  1. Set up your stream in the Castream app (camera, title, chat, the usual)
  2. Toggle X Live ON — plus any other destinations you want
  3. Tap Go Live
  4. Flip back to X Media Studio and confirm the broadcast is receiving video, then push it live there if X requires it

If you'd rather run the show from a computer — slides, guests, overlays — feed OBS into Castream via RTMP ingest and launch from the Castream Web Go Live Dashboard. Same destinations, bigger production.

Best practices for X live

Lead with the hook. X viewers decide in about three seconds. Open with the news, the take, or the question — not with "hey guys, welcome back, let's wait for people to join."

Pin a reply with context. Before you go live, post a reply to your own announcement with what the stream is about and how long you'll be on. Late joiners catch up instantly.

Go vertical-friendly, even in landscape. Most X viewing happens on phones held upright. Keep key visuals, faces, and text centered so nothing important gets cropped in the timeline preview.

Clip the best 60 seconds afterward. X rewards native video clips enormously. Take your strongest moment, post it as a standalone video, and link the full replay. Your Castream recording makes this easy.

Mind the audio. Timeline autoplay is muted, but the moment someone taps in, tinny laptop-mic audio makes them tap right back out. A $30 lav mic is the highest-ROI upgrade in streaming.

FAQ

Do I need X Premium to go live? X's live features and requirements change often. Check Media Studio — if you can create a broadcast in Producer, you're good to go regardless of subscription status.

What resolution should I stream to X? X viewers are overwhelmingly on phones, so either orientation works, but landscape 720p–1080p at 30 FPS is a safe default. Keep bitrate around 4–6 Mbps.

My stream isn't showing up on X. What happened? The usual suspects: an expired or mistyped stream key, or the broadcast not being started inside Media Studio. Regenerate credentials in Producer, update the destination in Castream, and make sure you've confirmed the broadcast on X's side.

Can I see X chat inside Castream? Chat lives on X itself. For X you'll want the Media Studio or X app open to catch replies in real time.

That's the whole playbook. Once X is saved as a destination, going live there is literally one toggle — which means the next time news breaks in your world, you're live before the thread even gets going.
