How to Manage Chat Across Platforms (Unified Chat)

How to Manage Chat Across Platforms (Unified Chat)

Picture this: you're mid-stream, deep in a boss fight. Someone on Twitch asks what controller you use. A viewer on YouTube wants to know your streaming setup. A regular on Facebook just dropped a joke that deserves a response. Three chats, three tabs, one brain — and a game that does not pause itself.

This is the problem unified chat solves. Instead of juggling a tab per platform, Castream pulls the chat from all your destinations into a single feed on Castream Web. One place to read everything, one place to respond.

What unified chat actually is

When you multistream with Castream — say, to YouTube, Twitch, and a Facebook Page simultaneously — each platform runs its own separate chat. Normally you'd need each platform open to follow along. Unified chat merges those conversations into one scrolling feed inside your Castream Web dashboard while you're live.

You see who's talking and where they're talking from, and you can jump into the conversation without switching tabs or losing track of your stream.

Using it during a stream

  1. Set up your stream on Castream Web (castream.io) and select your destinations as usual.
  2. Go live from the Go Live Dashboard.
  3. Open unified chat in the web dashboard while your stream is running.
  4. Follow the single feed. Messages from every destination appear together, labeled by platform so you always know where each one came from.
  5. Respond right from the feed. No tab-switching, no alt-tabbing mid-sentence.

It works whether you're streaming from the mobile app, from OBS through Castream's RTMP ingest, or straight from the web dashboard — the chat aggregation happens on Castream's side, so your setup doesn't matter.

Why it matters more than you'd think

Chat is where casual viewers become regulars. Someone asks a question, you answer it by name, and suddenly they're back next week. But that only works if you see the question — and when you're live on four platforms, most creators end up watching one chat closely and ignoring the rest.

Unified chat fixes the math. A few things it changes in practice:

  • Smaller platforms stop being ghost towns. That Facebook Page with 12 viewers? Those 12 people now get the same attention as your Twitch chat. They notice.
  • You catch the important stuff. Questions about your setup, your schedule, your links — they surface in one feed instead of hiding in the tab you forgot.
  • You're calmer on stream. One feed to glance at beats four tabs to monitor. Less cognitive load means a better stream.

A few practical tips

Glance, don't stare. Chat is a side dish, not the main course. Check the feed between moments — between matches, songs, topics — not mid-sentence.

Say names and platforms. "Great question, Marcus on YouTube" does two things: it answers Marcus, and it tells everyone else you're reading their platform too.

Pin your regulars mentally. The people who show up everywhere are your core community. Unified chat makes them visible — return the favor by remembering them.

Keep the dashboard open on a second screen or device if you can. Phone on a stand next to your monitor works fine. The feed is designed to be glanceable.

FAQ

Does unified chat work with all destinations? It aggregates chat from the destinations you're streaming to through Castream — YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Pages, and the rest. If a platform doesn't expose its chat to third parties, that platform's messages can't appear in the feed.

Do I need to be on Castream Web to use it? Yes — unified chat lives in the web dashboard. If you're streaming from the mobile app, just keep castream.io open in a browser on another device and you're set.

Does it work with OBS streams too? Yes. If your OBS feed goes through Castream's RTMP ingest and out to your destinations, unified chat covers it the same way.

Can viewers tell I'm using it? No — and they don't need to. From their side, you're just a streamer who actually reads chat. That's the whole trick.
