How to Stream a Pre-Recorded Video as Live
How to Stream a Pre-Recorded Video as Live
Maya teaches fitness classes online. Her clients live in three time zones, and the 6 a.m. slot that works for her is the middle of the night for half of them. She still wanted the feeling of a live class — everyone pressing play together, the chat buzzing — just not at an hour that required a 3 a.m. alarm.
So now she records the class the night before, uploads it to Castream, and schedules it to go out as a live stream the next morning. Her clients show up, the chat lights up, and Maya gets to watch it all roll in with her coffee instead of performing burpees on camera.
That's what streaming a pre-recorded video as live is: the reach and energy of a live broadcast, with the polish and control of a recording.
What "pre-recorded as live" actually means
Instead of pointing a camera at yourself in real time, you upload a finished video file to Castream Web. At the time you schedule, Castream plays that video out to your destinations — YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Pages, TikTok, Instagram, anywhere you've connected — exactly as if you were live. Viewers see a live stream. Chat works like a live stream. The only difference is you recorded it earlier.
This isn't the same as uploading a video as a regular upload. A regular upload sits on your channel waiting to be clicked. A scheduled live play-out creates an event: notifications go out, people show up at the same time, and there's a shared moment.
When pre-recorded beats going live
Going live is great, but it's not always the right tool. Streaming a pre-recorded video as live shines when:
- You want polish. Tutorials, product demos, and announcements benefit from editing, retakes, and clean audio. Record until it's right, then ship it as an event.
- Your audience is in another time zone. Record at noon, air at 8 p.m. their time.
- Consistency matters more than spontaneity. A weekly show that airs every Tuesday at 7 p.m. — even when you're traveling, sick, or just not feeling camera-ready.
- You're repurposing content. That webinar you ran last month? Trim the dead air, upload it, and run it as a live premiere for everyone who missed it.
- Nerves are real. Plenty of creators do their best work without a live audience watching them think. No shame in it — the audience gets a better show either way.
What kinds of videos work best
Almost anything works, but some formats are naturals for the pre-recorded-as-live treatment:
- Classes and workshops — fitness, cooking, music lessons, language classes
- Product launches and announcements — scripted, tight, no "can you hear me?" cold opens
- Interviews and podcasts — edit out the awkward pauses, keep the good stuff
- Tutorials and walkthroughs — screen recordings with clean narration
- Church services and ceremonies — record once, air at service time for remote members
If the value is in the content rather than the spontaneity, pre-recorded-as-live is probably the better format.
🎬 Setting it up in Castream Web
This happens on Castream Web (castream.io) rather than in the mobile app — you'll want a browser and your finished video file handy.
- Log in to Castream Web at castream.io with your usual account. Same login as the app: Google, Apple, or email and password.
- Upload your video. Find the video upload option in your web dashboard and upload the finished file. Larger files take longer — uploads need to finish processing before they can air, so don't cut this close.
- Add a title and description. This is what viewers see on the live event page. Stuck? Castream's AI can draft a title and description for you.
- Pick your destinations. Select everywhere this should air: YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Pages, TikTok, Instagram, custom RTMP. Same destinations you'd pick for a regular live stream.
- Schedule it. Choose the date and time it should go live.
- Show up for the premiere. When airtime hits, Castream plays your video out to every destination you selected. Be there in the chat — that's what makes it feel live.
⏱️ Give yourself buffer. Upload and schedule at least an hour before airtime — longer for big files — so processing finishes with room to spare. A video that's still processing at airtime is a stressful situation you can entirely avoid.
Making it feel live (because that's the point)
The video is pre-recorded; the experience shouldn't feel canned. A few things that help:
- Be in the chat. This is the big one. Answer questions, react to moments, say hi to regulars by name. An active host in chat sells the "live" feeling more than anything else you can do.
- Don't over-explain the format. You don't need to announce "this is pre-recorded" every five minutes — but don't lie if someone asks directly, either. Most audiences don't care how it was made; they care that you're present.
- Keep it tight. Edit out the rambling. A 25-minute tight video outperforms a 45-minute loose one, live or not.
- Match aspect ratio to your audience. Vertical (9:16) for TikTok and Instagram, horizontal (16:9) for YouTube and Twitch. If you're airing to both kinds of platforms, optimize for whichever audience matters most.
A few things worth knowing
📼 It still counts as a stream. The broadcast shows up in your stream history and recordings on your profile, just like any other live session.
🌐 Destination rules still apply. TikTok needs its RTMP setup with a valid stream key, and you may need to confirm the broadcast manually inside TikTok. Instagram Live works via RTMP the same way it does for regular streams.
🔁 One video, many airings. Got a banger? Nothing stops you from scheduling the same video again next month for a new audience.
After the broadcast
Once it airs, the recording lives on your profile like any other stream. Set it to public if you want it discoverable, or keep it private and share the link directly. Check the chat message counts to see which moments got people talking — that's useful intel for the next one.
